If you're a tradie, your customers aren't searching Australia-wide. They're searching for someone nearby, right now, who can fix their problem. Local SEO is how you show up when they do.

Here's the no-jargon version.

1. Get a Google Business Profile

This is the big one. A Google Business Profile is what shows up in the map pack — the three businesses at the top of local search results. It's free, takes 15 minutes to set up, and it's the single highest-impact thing you can do.

Add your services, your hours, your service area, and some photos. Get happy customers to leave reviews. Respond to every review, good or bad.

2. Make sure your site mentions your location

Your website should say where you work. Not just "Melbourne plumber" buried in the footer — mention the suburbs you service on your homepage, in your page titles, in your headings.

3. Get listed in the right directories

Google cross-references your name, address, and phone number across the web. If they match everywhere, Google trusts you more. List your business on TrueLocal, Hotfrog, Yellow Pages, and your local chamber of commerce.

4. Collect reviews (and respond to them)

Reviews are a local SEO superpower. Ask every happy customer to leave one. When they do, respond — "Thanks mate, appreciate the kind words" is enough. It shows Google (and future customers) that you're active.

5. Track the keywords that bring in work

"Plumber Melbourne" is nice to rank for, but "emergency plumber Brunswick" is what gets you the 2am call-out. Track both, but pay more attention to the specific ones.

6. Add a page for each service

Don't cram everything on one page. Have a page for "hot water systems", one for "blocked drains", one for "gas fitting". Each page can rank for its own keywords and bring in a different type of job.

7. Be fast and mobile-friendly

Most of your customers will search on their phone, often while standing in front of the problem. If your site takes five seconds to load or looks broken on mobile, they'll go to the next tradie on the list.

8. Track your progress

SEO isn't set-and-forget. Add your keywords to Rank Track, check your dashboard weekly, and watch the trend over months. If something's working, do more of it. If something's not, change course.

You don't need to be a marketing expert to get this right. You just need to show up where your customers are looking — and keep showing up.
